Etsy, eBay or Walmart: Which Marketplace First?
Etsy vs eBay vs Walmart compared on product fit, entry requirements, logistics and content rules, with a recommended order for your first global channel.
The short answer for a seller choosing a first global marketplace: Etsy if you sell handmade, design or personalized goods; eBay if you have a broad, varied catalog or sell used and collectible items; Walmart if you are targeting US volume and can set up domestic logistics. That answer only looks at product type, though. Entry requirements, logistics load, buyer expectations and content rules all shape the decision. This article compares the three on the same criteria and suggests a starting order. For the connection details of each, see Etsy integration, eBay integration and Walmart Marketplace integration.
Three marketplaces, three different buyers
Etsy centers on handmade, vintage and craft supplies. The buyer is looking for something out of the ordinary and is willing to pay a little more for it. Baskets are small and margins relatively high. The audience is concentrated in the US, the UK and Western Europe.
eBay carries one of the widest product ranges anywhere: new, used, collectible, spare parts, electronics, apparel. The buyer compares prices, checks seller ratings and buys at auction or fixed price. The audience is global, with the US, UK, Germany and Australia most prominent.
Walmart Marketplace is the online arm of the largest US retailer. The buyer expects a fair price, fast delivery and painless returns from anything bought at Walmart. The audience is almost entirely American; volume is large, competition tough and seller approval selective.
Choose a marketplace by the buyer, not the product. Answering "who buys this, why, and at what price" points you to the right channel.
Entry requirements and startup cost
Opening an Etsy shop is quick; after identity and payment verification you can list. There is a per-listing fee and a transaction fee, published on Etsy's current fee page. Products must fit Etsy's definition of handmade, vintage or craft supply.
eBay starts with an individual account, but new sellers face limits on item count and total listed value that rise with sales history. A Store subscription is optional. We cover this in eBay selling limits and store growth.
Walmart requires an application and approval. It asks for sales history, catalog size, product quality and a US fulfillment plan. The process is longer than the other two and the list of accepted countries changes. There is no monthly subscription after approval, but there is a referral fee and a performance expectation.
Startup cost usually ranks Etsy < eBay < Walmart, and revenue potential can rank the other way. The channel that is easiest to enter is the one that starts small.
Logistics and delivery expectations
Etsy buyers accept a preparation time for handmade goods; a realistic delivery window and correct shipping information are enough. Shipping direct from overseas is common and accepted.
eBay buyers watch the stated delivery window and rate sellers against it. Overseas shipping works, but tracking and on-time dispatch are the foundation of your performance score. Shipping from a warehouse in the US or Europe improves competitiveness.
Walmart buyers are used to fast, free delivery. Shipping direct from overseas is technically possible, but transit time and freight cost make it hard to compete. Most sellers send stock to the US in bulk and fulfill through WFS or a third-party warehouse. We compare those options in Walmart WFS vs seller fulfilled.
Common to all three is export paperwork: customs declaration, currency and commodity details for every order. How that is automated is covered in micro-export and ETGB order flow.
Content and language
On Etsy, content tells a story: material, process, personalization. Title and tag SEO drives sales. English is required; other languages follow the audience.
On eBay, content is technical and comparative: product identifiers, compatibility, condition, dimensions. Matching eBay's product catalog improves visibility. Language follows the target country.
On Walmart, content is structured: category attributes, barcodes, standardized image rules. Walmart's listing quality score affects ranking. English and US units are required; for size conversion see international size and unit conversion.
Decision checklist
- Classify the product: handmade or design item, standard and comparable item, or high-volume consumer good?
- Define the buyer: someone seeking something different, a price comparer, or someone expecting fast delivery?
- Measure logistics capacity: will you ship direct from your country, or can you hold stock in the US?
- Set the starting budget: listing fees, commission, freight, customs and content preparation.
- Assess content readiness: English titles, descriptions, images and size charts.
- Check entry conditions: Etsy category fit, eBay limits, Walmart approval requirements.
- Set a three-month target on the first channel (orders, return rate, delivery time), then add the second.
This mirrors the broader new marketplace launch checklist.
Recommended starting order
For most businesses:
- Design or handmade products: start on Etsy, add eBay once the audience settles. Walmart rarely fits this product type.
- Standard products with a wide catalog: start on eBay and settle listing quality while limits rise. Apply to Walmart once US demand is clear.
- US-focused with logistics in place: build sales history on eBay while applying to Walmart, then run both once approved.
Whichever order you choose, the second channel opens more easily than the first because catalog, content and order flow already exist. In Bulutegra, Etsy and eBay are authorized with one click and the Walmart account connects alongside; products match to the catalog by SKU and barcode, and stock on all three channels is fed from a single pool. When an order arrives, export paperwork is prepared, US orders have sizes converted one step up according to the product's size list, and the order is written to your ERP. Per-channel content fields hold a different title and description for each marketplace. Opening the second and third channel becomes adding a channel to an existing routine rather than building a new one.
How it works with Bulutegra
Whatever your first channel, setup follows the same four steps: Connect, Match, Watch, Hand over. In shadow mode the system only reads for one to two weeks; then you grant write permission channel by channel. Channel monitoring runs continuously, and a channel that goes quiet sends a notification to your phone. The profitability page shows contribution per channel with tax, return risk and the commission model applied, so you see which marketplace actually earns. For the full cross-border picture, read the cross-border marketplace integration guide, see our approach on Why Bulutegra, and request a walkthrough for your first global channel through the demo form.
Frequently asked questions
Which marketplace is easiest to start selling on?
Etsy usually has the lowest barrier; opening a shop is quick and there is a ready audience for handmade, design and vintage goods. eBay is open to individual sellers but applies selling limits at the start. Walmart runs an approval process and looks for sellers with some scale. Check each marketplace's current seller page for registration terms.
Should I launch on all three at once?
Usually not. Each marketplace has different content rules, shipping expectations and performance metrics, and learning all three at once raises your error rate. Settle order, shipping and returns on one channel, then add the next. With an integration platform in place, the second and third channels open far faster than the first.
Can an international seller apply to Walmart Marketplace?
Walmart accepts sellers from a defined list of countries and asks for sales history, a product catalog and a US fulfillment plan in the application. The list and requirements change periodically. Before applying, review the current requirements on the Walmart Marketplace registration page and settle how you will ship inside the US.
