Walmart WFS vs Seller Fulfilled: Which Model Fits?

Walmart Fulfillment Services compared with seller-fulfilled: which products fit each model, how to run both together, and how to keep stock and price right.

Walmart WFS (Walmart Fulfillment Services) is the model where you send inventory to Walmart's US warehouses and Walmart packs, ships, handles returns and answers customers after the sale. Seller-fulfilled means you ship each order yourself from your own warehouse or a third-party facility. The choice depends on product size, turnover, margin and the delivery promise you want to make, and most sellers end up using both. This article compares the two models, lists the decision criteria and explains how to run a mixed setup. For connecting the account itself, see our Walmart Marketplace integration guide.

How Walmart WFS works

The flow is straightforward. You label and box products according to Walmart's requirements, ship them to the assigned facility, and Walmart receives the stock and publishes the listing with a "Fulfilled by Walmart" badge. When an order arrives, Walmart packs it, ships it, accepts the return and answers the customer's questions. You pay storage plus a per-order fulfillment fee.

What to watch:

How seller-fulfilled works

With seller-fulfilled orders, the product stays under your control. When an order comes in, you pack it at your own warehouse or a US-based 3PL and ship with a carrier Walmart accepts, then upload tracking within your stated handling time. Returns, customer questions and delivery issues are yours to handle.

Advantages:

Challenges:

If you ship direct from overseas, export paperwork has to be ready at order time, your carrier needs a realistic US delivery window, and tracking must reach Walmart in a format it recognizes. Our cross-border marketplace integration guide covers this in depth.

Which products belong in which model

Decide per product, not per account. These criteria point the way:

WFS is not an all-or-nothing decision. The most common pattern we see is a handful of best sellers in WFS with the rest of the catalog seller-fulfilled.

Managing stock and price in a mixed setup

If an item has both WFS inventory and your own stock, you now have two inventory sources: one in Walmart's warehouse, one in yours. Walmart chooses the source per order based on delivery time and cost. On your side, two questions need constant answers: how many units are in each source, and is the price right for each?

For inventory, WFS stock must be kept separate from every other channel; a sale on Amazon or your own store does not touch units sitting in Walmart's warehouse. Your own warehouse, on the other hand, is a shared pool across all channels. Both need to exist as distinct warehouses in one panel, which is the setup described in multi-warehouse inventory management.

For price, the cost of a WFS unit includes import and storage; the cost of a seller-fulfilled unit includes international shipping. The floor price for the same SKU can differ by source. Bulutegra's price matrix holds list, sale and floor prices per channel, and the profitability page shows the contribution per channel with tax, return risk and the commission model applied. A Walmart-specific floor-and-ceiling repricing rule adjusts to competitors without crossing the floor. The mechanics are explained in price sync, repricing and Buy Box.

Checklist before your first WFS shipment

  1. Confirm your Walmart Marketplace account is approved and WFS is enabled on it.
  2. Select the first WFS products by turnover and margin; keep the first shipment small.
  3. Check each product against WFS size, weight and category rules.
  4. Apply Walmart's current barcode and labeling guidelines; wrong labels delay receiving.
  5. Plan customs and import for the US shipment with your forwarder and accountant.
  6. Define WFS stock as a separate warehouse in your panel so it never mixes with your own.
  7. Calculate cost and floor price separately for WFS units and build the repricing rule on that.
  8. Watch the first batch through receiving and go-live; use the days-of-stock report to time the next shipment.

If you already know the FBA versus FBM split on Amazon, the logic will feel familiar; see Amazon FBA and FBM integration for the parallels.

How it works with Bulutegra

Your Walmart account connects to Bulutegra and products are matched to the catalog by SKU and barcode. WFS inventory is tracked as its own warehouse, while your own warehouse sits in the shared stock pool with every other channel. For seller-fulfilled orders, export paperwork, currency and customs details are prepared at order time, the order is written to your ERP with carrier and payment details, and for US orders sizes are converted one step up according to the product's own size list. The price matrix and the Walmart floor-and-ceiling repricing rule run separately for each source. Low-stock alerts and the days-of-stock report tell you when to send the next WFS batch. Frequently asked questions

What is Walmart WFS?

Walmart Fulfillment Services is the program where you send inventory to Walmart's US warehouses and Walmart handles picking, packing, shipping, returns and customer service for each order. Items carry Walmart's fast-delivery badges. Fees and eligibility rules are published in Seller Center and change over time, so check the current version before deciding.

Can an international seller use Walmart WFS?

Walmart accepts sellers from a defined list of countries and requires WFS inventory to be delivered to a US facility. An overseas seller can ship stock in bulk to the US and hand it to WFS, but import, customs and labeling are the seller's responsibility. Check the current country list and requirements on the Walmart Marketplace registration page.

Can WFS and seller-fulfilled coexist on the same account?

Yes. The same item can have both WFS inventory and stock shipped from your own warehouse. Walmart decides which source to use based on delivery time and cost. In a mixed setup you need to track the two stocks separately and price each source correctly.
