Reduce Apparel Returns with a Size Finder

Wrong size is a leading cause of apparel and footwear returns. How the Size Finder module recommends a size from height and weight, how to set it up and measure it.

A size finder compares a few details from the shopper, such as height and weight, with the product's own size chart and recommends the right size. Since choosing the wrong size is one of the most common reasons for apparel and footwear returns, helping the customer pick correctly the first time is one of the most concrete ways to reduce your return rate. This article explains where the wrong-size problem comes from, how Bulutegra's Size Finder module works, and how to measure its effect in your own business. We promise no percentage; the result depends on the accuracy of your size charts.

Why wrong size happens so often

In apparel, size is a concept that changes from product to product. The same "M" is tight in one brand and loose in another; even two fits from the same brand carry different measurements. Shoppers usually pick the size they are used to and discover on delivery that it does not fit. Some order two sizes and return one because of the uncertainty; on marketplaces this behavior is common.

The second cause is the size chart itself. Many products have no chart, or a chart copied from a generic template rather than the actual pattern. Even a shopper who reads it does not know how to take the measurement. The third cause is cross-border selling: US, EU, UK and Turkish size systems differ, and a product listed without conversion almost guarantees a return. We covered that separately in international size and measurement conversion.

The real cost of a wrong-size return

The cost of a return is independent of the product's price and rarely calculated in full. For a wrong-size return, these items add up:

Together these can wipe out the gross profit of a product with a single return. That is why reducing returns is a cheaper route to growth than acquiring new customers. To organize the return process itself, see marketplace returns management and the returns portal; this article focuses on preventing the return from happening at all.

How Size Finder works

Bulutegra's Size Finder is a small tool added to the product page. The shopper enters height and weight, plus one or two optional details such as body type; the module compares these with that product's own size chart and recommends a size. The key point: the recommendation is calculated from the product's actual fit, not from a generic chart. For a slim-fit shirt the recommendation moves up a size; for a relaxed dress it does not.

On the shopper's side the flow takes seconds:

  1. The shopper opens the "Find my size" panel on the product page.
  2. They enter height and weight; extra fields are optional.
  3. The module recommends a size based on the product's chart and, where needed, shows a short note such as "this item runs small".
  4. The shopper selects the recommended size with one click or makes their own choice.

On the seller's side, the work is entering accurate size charts. The module uses the size and measurement data in your product catalog; if you generate size chart images with Content Studio, the same data stays consistent in both places. You do not have to enter a chart per product; product groups that share a fit can draw from one chart.

Size Finder is only as accurate as your size chart. Before setup, verify the charts for your best-selling and most-returned product groups by measuring real garments; those few hours determine how much the module helps.

Setup checklist

Completing these steps before switching the module on ensures correct recommendations from day one:

The last item matters most. If the recommended size and the chosen size frequently diverge, either the chart is wrong or the fit note is missing. That divergence is a concrete signal to fix the charts.

How to measure the effect

Instead of promising a percentage, here is how to measure. If your returns portal records a return reason (Bulutegra's returns management does), compare "did not fit" returns in the period before the module with an equal period after. Compare per product group; a whole-catalog average hides a module that works in one group and not in another.

The second measure is usage rate. If only a small share of shoppers use the tool, the change in returns will be small too; the problem then is not the module but its position or visibility on the page. The third measure is the number of customers who order two sizes and return one; a good recommendation aims to reduce that behavior.

Reviews are a helpful signal as well. When comments such as "runs small, size up" accumulate, it is time to update the chart or the fit note. We explained how to gather marketplace reviews in one place in importing marketplace reviews to your own store.

Return reasons beyond size

Wrong size is not the only reason for returns. The color may differ from the photo, the fabric may be thinner than expected, or the item smaller than the dimensions in the description. The fix for those lies in product content: accurate color names, fabric details, product dimensions and enough images. Size Finder does not replace that content; it sits on top of it. If non-size reasons dominate your return data, fix the content first and then switch the module on.

How it works with Bulutegra

Size Finder is one of Bulutegra's add-on modules and uses the size chart data in your product catalog. The same data feeds Content Studio's size chart images, the size conversion applied to cross-border orders, and return reason tracking in the returns portal, so size information is kept in one place and stays consistent everywhere. Frequently asked questions

How does a size finder work?

The shopper enters a few details on the product page, such as height, weight and optionally body type; the tool compares them with that product's own size chart and recommends a size. Because the recommendation is calculated from the product's own fit rather than a generic chart, it gives a product-specific answer instead of assuming every brand sizes the same.

Does a size finder really reduce returns?

It targets returns caused by wrong size, but the effect depends on your product group, the accuracy of your size charts and how many shoppers use the tool. Measure it by comparing return reasons before and after switching it on, and be wary of anyone promising a fixed percentage.

What data does a size finder need?

An accurate size chart for each product or product group (chest, waist, hip and length measurements per size) and, where relevant, fit information (slim, regular, relaxed). If the chart is wrong the recommendation is wrong, so reviewing charts is the first setup step.
